Honoring Thomas McAlpine

Western Oklahoma State College Honors Legacy of Thomas McAlpine
ALTUS, OK – February 2025

Western Oklahoma State College (WOSC) commemorated the life and legacy of former Pioneer baseball standout and coach Thomas Reese McAlpine during the second annual Thomas McAlpine Opening Weekend. The event, held at Altus, Oklahoma, brought together players, alumni, and the McAlpine family to celebrate Thomas’ contributions both on and off the field.

Known for his elite offensive talent and leadership, McAlpine played a pivotal role in leading the 2008 Pioneers to their first-ever appearance at the NJCAA World Series. His career statistics still rank among the most impressive in the program’s history. Beyond his athletic achievements, McAlpine was remembered as a beloved teammate and natural encourager whose kindness and compassion left a lasting impact on those around him.

Returning to his alma mater in 2021 as the Pioneers’ hitting coach, McAlpine helped guide the team to a runner-up finish at the World Series that season, earning him Regional Coach of the Year honors in his first year of coaching. His dedication to the sport and mentorship of student-athletes continued to shape the baseball program until his untimely passing in September 2023.

To honor Thomas’ memory, his mother, Suzi McAlpine, threw the ceremonial first pitch at the opening game of the 2025 season, joined by Thomas’ brother, Duncan McAlpine. The emotional moment highlighted the enduring bond between the McAlpine family and the Western baseball community.

In addition to the on-field tribute, the Western Oklahoma State College Foundation announced the establishment of the Thomas Reese McAlpine Scholarship Endowment Fund. Created by Mrs. McAlpine, the scholarship aims to support students with a passion for baseball and a commitment to education. Eligible recipients include current or prospective Western baseball players, students pursuing careers in coaching, or individuals demonstrating a love for the game. Scholarship candidates are expected to exemplify the values Thomas embodied—work ethic, loyalty, teamwork, and care for others.

“Thomas made an impact on everyone who came into contact with him,” said Coach Kurt Russell. “He never said a negative word about anyone and was a first-class gentleman. His legacy will live on in the lives of those who receive this scholarship and through the baseball program he loved so much.”

The Western Oklahoma State College Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students and programs, will administer the scholarship endowment. Contributions to the fund can be made to help ensure Thomas’ legacy continues to inspire future generations of student-athletes.
